This paper summarises quantitative and qualitative data about the study workload associated with a sample of 36 OU courses included in a study of interaction in computer-mediated higher education courses. Study workload is a complex phenomenon, with evidence that it is perceived as an important issue by students. Although there was no statistically significant association between computer-mediated interaction and increased work load, some courses were identified by students as having added study workload as a result of interactive components such as conferencing, Internet or software. Two cases study courses are presented for more in-depth analysis of workload implications.
